Srinagar recorded the season’s highest temperature at 31.5 degrees Celsius. Jammu and Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, also recorded their hottest day of the season at 41.0 degrees Celsius and 32.0 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded a maximum temperature of 30.0 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam recorded 29.0 degrees Celsius.
In north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the temperature settled at 30.0 degrees Celsius. In Gulmarg, the temperature was recorded at 22.2 degrees Celsius.
The Jammu division also witnessed heatwave conditions in Banihal, Batote, Bhaderwah, and Katra, with all places recording day temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius.
Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said that the heatwave is likely to continue tomorrow. However, light rain and thundershower activity from the evening of May 18 is expected to bring down the temperature until May 20.
“Thundershower activity is expected till May 20, with the possibility of gusty winds as well,” he said. A short spell of heatwave is likely again from May 21 to May 24.
He added that from May 25, there is a possibility of another short spell of light rain and thundershowers.
The MeT Director advised people, especially in the Jammu division, to take necessary precautions due to the rising temperatures. He urged people to stay hydrated, particularly children, the elderly, and those in vulnerable health. (KNO)
